News Item 18 - Club Championships 3/4 Oct
As you are aware the club championships are to be held on the weekend of 3rd/4th October and details have been on our website for some weeks. It has been noticeable that entries have been slow to be submitted and I would urge you to check if you have entered your son/daughter and, if not, to do so as soon as possible. It will not be possible to accept entries on the day.In order for the championships to go ahead and run smoothly I do require a number of volunteers to carry out various functions. It is not possible for me to use people from other clubs as I would during our open meets and therefore all the volunteers have to come from within Chesterfield SC. Failure to fill all the roles will result in the championships being cancelled. Please can you look at the list of roles that need to be covered and volunteer your services. If you are a trained official I would prefer that you carry out that role. The championships are also a good opportunity to practice a skill (like timekeeping) that you may be thinking of training for in the future. Please let me know which role you will be volunteering for by e-mail to me on cathyclugston@aol.com or text me on 07711 511731 (include your name as I might not recognise the tel number). We need
1 x Announcer
2 x referee
2 x chief time keeper
6 x time keeper
6 x judges
2 x competitor marshalls (1 male and 1 female would be ideal)
2 x team manager (1 male and 1 female would be ideal)
2 x runners (to assist referees and electronic timing personnel)
2 x refreshment technicians (keep the officials and helpers watered)
2 x front desk staff (to collect entrance money)
2 x security officers
Ideally I would like to have all the above in place by mid week at the latest.
Thanks
Cathy Lewis-Clugston (Club Secretary)

News Item 16 - Jake's Progress
Jake Golding selected for ASA Apprenticeship Programme for Coaches
Swimming has launched a new apprenticeship programme for coaches. The scheme launched by the ASA in conjunction with the Institute of Swimming (its training provider) will be offering 40 professional apprenticeships to young coaches, This scheme building on the success of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence Programme which helped Rebecca Adlington to her two gold medals in Beijing last year and has helped more than 300 athletes like Rebecca remain in the sport.
The ASA believes the scheme will be particularly welcome in today’s uncertain economic climate because it will offer an opportunity to young people aged 16-24 to pursue training in coaching and effectively create not only a job opportunity but a career opportunity, in all the Olympic disciplines in the pool. Candidates will be taken to Level 3 qualification in the UK Coaching Certificate whilst they work in a club environment.
This is the first phase of an ambitious new apprenticeship coaching programme to be launched by the ASA working with the National Skills Academy and in Phase 2 the ASA is hoping to launch a further 200 places for level 2 coaches.
Nick Sellwood, head of the ASA’s Talent Development, said: "This is a great opportunity for young people with coaching ambitions in any of the aquatic disciplines."We have been aware for some time that many of our top coaches have followed a development path which did not include higher education. This is an opportunity to provide a fast-track programme for young people into high performance coaching.
"The ASA in partnership with the IoS is committed to supporting the new generation of developing coaches within our Beacon Programmes and supported by the Talent Development team. This applies to all four disciplines."
David Sparkes said: "Coaching is at the heart of the success we achieved in Beijing and the lasting legacy we can all leave for the sport is even better coaches to take the sport forward from London. This scheme based on the UK Coaching Certificate will do just that and will give our clubs the experienced coaches they need to find the next stars in the pool to challenge for gold medals."
Well done Jake!
Kind regards,
Joe Lack (Chesterfield Swimming Club – Head Coach)
