The weekend of October 2nd saw Chesterfield Swimming Club start the new swimming season at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. The competition was strong at the Robin Hood Open meet with the likes of City of Peterborough Swimming club, now coached by former Chesterfield Head Coach Ben Negus and Wigan BEST in attendance.
From the start Chesterfield swimmers were impressive with Imogen Morris taking gold in 10 year olds 200m Breaststroke in a time of 3:19.84 and Lizzy Critchlow finishing just outside the medals in her first long course meet. Lizzy’s sister, Sophie, continued the strong start by collecting bronze in 12 year old 200m Breaststroke. Imogen Morris continued her medal streak by finishing 3rd in the 50m freestyle.
It was now time for the boys to collect their first medal of the meet with John Richards taking silver in the 50m freestyle. Imogen again showing her potential by posting a 200m IM time of 3:00.98 that placed her fourth missing out on bronze by half a second. Another medal was awarded to Chesterfield which Rebecca Haw taking bronze in 50m Backstroke and this was followed up by another female swimmer, Fran Anderson collecting silver in the 100m Butterfly.
Moving into the final session of the first day saw Oliver Wilkes finish in the bronze medal position of the 400m freestyle, with a time of 4:42.40, taking the medal tally to seven after day one.
Sunday morning saw the Chesterfield boys fight back by take gold for Chesterfield in the 50m Breaststroke, Matthew Mounsey the swimmer with a time of 39.51. This was quickly followed up by Will Richards taking bronze in the same event. Will’s sibling gave Chesterfield another medal by picking up silver in the 100m Breaststroke and Imogen Morris again showing her dominance in the water with gold, this time in the 100m Breaststroke. Sophie Critchlow picked up her second medal of the meet with a bronze in the same event.
At the end of the meet Chesterfield amassed a total of 12 medals and over one hundred long course personal bests. Chesterfield SC Head Coach, Dan Higgon, reflected back on the weekend “It is great start to the season especially this early on as it wasn’t expected. We are currently going through a technique phase of our season so we haven’t been pushing the swimmers as hard as we could and to come away with 12 medals and to have so many PB’s shows that our system is working. The swimmers and parents deserve credit for the hard work they have been putting in especially the early mornings and if they maintain the work rate and enthusiasm we will see even greater results later on in the season. A big thanks also has to go to Jake Golding & Carla Bickerstaffe for their hard work in producing the swimmers within the club so we can come to these meets and do so well”.

News Item 63 - Mike Ward
Dear All
It is with regret that I have to inform you that Mike Ward our Chairman for the last five years has unfortunately decided to stand down from this position.
During his tenure Mike has worked tirelessly for the club in his and the committees quest to move the club forward. Indeed his leadership has enabled the club to make significant progress both in and out of the water. In many areas beyond what was originally anticipated.
So on behalf of CSC committees past and present I would like to thank him for all his hard work and wish him all the very best for the future. I am sure you will all still see him regularly around our pools and will also wish him all the very best.
In terms of Mike's successor it is anticipated a Special General Meeting will be called in the near future to elect a replacement , details of which will be made available in due course.
In the interim I have agreed to cover the role as Acting Chairperson on a temporary basis. If you have any questions on any of this please feel free to ask a Committee Member.
In the meantime many thanks for your continued support.
Best regards
Nigel Butler

News Item 58 - Head Coach update
Well the number and quality of the candidates applying for the position has been flattering to say the least and the decision to reach a shortlist not easy.
Under Julia Brown as Chair of the Selection Panel, the candidates have been whittled down to 4 all of whom will be invited to attend an interview, prepare a training schedule for a swimmer under set conditions and carry out a short practical in order that we can follow a clear process and deliver the right candidate to take the club through its next stage of development. These interviews will take place over the next week.
We will have a final decision shortly, at which time following their formal acceptance of the post we will notify everyone and introduce the New Head Coach of Chesterfield Swimming Club at the earliest opportunity.
Change is never easy but it is a fact of life and as parents we need to work as a team to support all the swimmers, coaches and teachers to allow this club assume the position it so rightly deserves within British Swimming.
Your help is very much required and appreciated.
Should you have any questions please direct them to Julia Brown, Nigel Butler or me.
Happy Easter.

News Item 57 - CSC successes at the Derbyshires
These are the results that I have put together from the Derbyshires, it includes all the individual swims and the relay events from the last weekend. I think we've had a brilliant championships overall with some fantastic swims. I'm not sure how many PB's were broken, but I think nearly everyone PB'd in most of their events.
We complied a massive 290 top 10 placings and these were made up of;
31 first places, 35 second places, 40 third places, 37 fourth places, 30 fifth places, 22 sixth places and 95 seventh to tenth places!!
We also had 13 top 10 BAGCAT finishes across the age groups and these were;
10 years age group - Scarlett Howells 1st, Imogen Morris 3rd and Elizabeth Critchlow 7th.
11 years age group - Jack Tomlinson 5th, Stephanie Williams 7th and Abigail Newman 10th.
12 years age group - Sam Butler 2nd, Matthew Mounsey 3rd, Max Ward 9th, Sophie Critchlow 3rd and Jessie Westnidge 9th.
14 years age group - Oliver Wilkes 3rd and Will Richards 7th.
So really I don't think we've done bad as a club over the three Derbyshire weekends!!
Thanks very much.

News Item 54 - Policy Infringements
Thursday 18 February 2010 17.45 class incident at Brookfield
Message to parents to apply common sense
It has been brought to my attention that a father entered the girl's changing facilities at Brookfield to assist his daughter on Thursday 18th February. This is unacceptable behaviour. As a club we continually work to ensure that our swimmers are able to swim in a safe, positive and friendly atmosphere. This extends into the changing rooms where we expect normal responsible behaviour from swimmers and parents alike.
As a part of our child protection policy no person over 8 years is allowed to enter the opposite sex's changing room. This policy is not only there to protect the children but also the parents and guardians. If your child is under 8 years and needs assistance to change then they must prepare for the session in the changing room suitable to the parent. If, as in this incident, the child (a girl) appears not to be prepared to use the male changing room with her father then only a female parent or guardian should attend her. This policy must be complied with. At any time senior and young ladies may be changing from a previous session or in order to assist the lesson.
ADDITIONALLY
While we're on the subject of common sense. Some parents may feel that they are able take the opportunity to use changing facilities for their own activities. Under no circumstances is it acceptable for an adult who is not attending as a swimmer, or is a member of the club and CRB checked to change, particularly shower at venues which are privately hired for the sole use of Chesterfield Swimming Club.
Please apply common sense towards the way you act in the vicinity of children as the resulting penalties are severe. We take such contraventions to our policy very seriously.

News Item 49 - Announcement - Caretaker Head Coach
Following the recent announcement that Joe Lack tendered his resignation, we have set the wheels in motion to identify, interview and appoint a Head Coach to continue the clubs development into the next decade.
The vacancy has been advertised on both the British Swimming and club web sites and we have already had expressions of interest from coaches both known and unknown to us, one from Hungary.
In order to appoint a coach who will fit into our plans for the club and the current development we need to recognise that many coaches are on 3 months notice period.
To ensure that the momentum for this season is maintained we are pleased to announce that Carla Bickerstaffe will assume the role of caretaker Head Coach to ensure continuity.
Carla is well qualified to carry out this role and we will be supporting her over the next 4 months or so to ensure swimmers reach the qualification times established at the beginning of the season.
As a Committee we expect swimmers to continue to focus on the end of season plans and work hard in training to achieve our objectives.
The seasons focus remains on the National, Welsh Nationals and Chesterfield SC's Summer Festival in July. Should you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact either Nigel Butler or me.
Jake Golding will continue to focus on junior elite working towards their season's objectives.

During the last 3 years Chesterfield Swimming Club has developed under Head Coach Joe Lack and his team to become a major force within the Region. This is a reflection on the hard work put in by the swimmers.
It is therefore with a great deal of regret that I have to announce that we have received the resignation from the position of Head Coach from Joe Lack.
Behind the scenes efforts are already being made to ensure that the club continues to develop and maintain its momentum and high level of coaching to support the swimmers in their future careers.
Joe will take up his new role with South Yorkshire Police towards the end of February.
We will advertise the position on the British Swimming website commencing tomorrow and hope to shortlist within a month.
During the interim period the committee requests that you all remain flexible during the transition.
Our main concern is to support those swimmers particularly affected.
Finally we wish Joe well in his training for his chosen career with South Yorkshire Police.
